Psalm 138:8 The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.
I felt restless for years, wondering what my purpose was. Nothing I did seemed to fill the gap. Now, I was a Christian and did ‘Christian’ things such as going to church, praying, tithing, and having a relationship with Christ, and I knew being close to God was part of my purpose. But, I felt this pull, almost all of the time, but what I didn’t know was what it was to.
One day, I got the idea that it would be fun to write children’s picture books. I’d read those to my kids when they were younger and enjoyed the innocence and whimsy of them. “How fun would that be!” I thought to myself. But, at the time, I passed it off as a fleeting fancy and didn’t do much about it. But the thought of writing kept coming back and wouldn’t go away. After months of blowing it off, I looked into some online writing courses. I started out with children’s book classes, then went on to creative writing, then fiction, and on and on. It was with writing that I found it – the piece to fill the gap. I didn’t feel pulled anymore. I felt like I was sitting in a puddle of my newly found purpose and splashing around in it with joy.
Then I began to do the thing I thought was the most out of reach – write a novel. It seemed so huge, so insurmountable. So, I stopped focusing on what it would take to get to the end of the book and focused on these three words – just keep going. Little by little, it grew into a bigger story that did fill up a book. And every step of the way, I experienced joy that I’d never experienced before. I couldn’t wait to sit down at the computer to see what would happen to my characters next.
I believe, with all of my heart, that God put that hole in me that only the purpose he destined for me could fill. He called me when the time was right, and he directed me in the way to go.
Every person has a God given purpose. We all have something we’re drawn to or will be drawn to, and no matter what we do, we won’t be able escape it. It will be something we enjoy and we’re fulfilled by. If you don’t know what it is yet, pray about it. Ask God to reveal what it is He has planned for you to do. At the right time, He’ll reveal it to you, and will open doors for you that no man can shut.
